Towering Clouds

I thought this would look better in monochrome, to give a brooding look to those clouds. A little rain did fall a short distance away, but was barely noticeable other than the fact there was a slight rainbow (not in this shot).

This was taken looking back towards the island, low tide.

Vivid Coral

With the tide at its lowest, this coral really stood out with its bright colour. With a lot of dead coral around I can only imagine how it once looked. At normal levels the water is around thigh/waster height out here.

On one of my last few days I decided I was going to get up early to see a sunrise - this meant getting up at 5.15AM. This was also the first time I'd seen the tide so far out. In fact it was only ankle deep in places where normally it would have been waist height.

Maldivian Classic Beach Sunset

This was the first time I got to see the sun quite low in the sky - the previous days all had a high bank of clouds at the horizon obscuring the sun well before it was close to setting.

Gasfinolhu By Night

This particular evening, I was sitting drinking coffee overlooking the lagoon, and realised what a lovely evening shot was unfolding, so I dashed back to the bungalow to grab the Gorillapod and set it up on a table. THis shot is pretty much what came out of the camera with only minor things done in Photoshop, such as curves and sharpening.

This will be the first of a few that were taken in The Maldives, (I'll be milking the photos for sure!)
On this particular day, you could see a major rain storm coming our way at around 9.30 in the morning... Apparently it was the outer edges of a cyclone that was hitting the Bay Of Bengal and coming in fast. Needless to say it rained like I've never seen before!

Basket #7. Oxley Bank (2004)

I visited the Yorkshire Sculpture Park for the first time last month and found some really great photo subjects, but this one really stood out for me. The description below is lifted straight from the YSP website...
Since their artistic collaboration began in 1992, Winter/Hörbelt have developed many sculptures that are also structures where people can meet.

Basket #7. Oxley Bank is a two-storey steel pavilion on a high ridge of the Longside valley, providing shelter, rest and spectacular views across the landscape. The Bretton Estate was designed to incorporate a series of viewing points and follies, only a few of which remain.

Winter/Hörbelt have taken this historical precedent and at the same time opened up a stunning walking route to Longside Gallery. Constructed from double-layered steel mesh, from a distance Basket #7. Oxley Bank appears to be alternately solid and semi-transparent: from inside looking out it both offers and slightly obscures the view, and becomes a place for reflection and rest.

Basket #7. Oxley Bank is so called because it has been erected previously in six places around the world and remains on loan after the Winter/Hörbelt Longside exhibition of 2004.

Druid's Writing Desk

This past weekend I drove up to Brimham Rocks for my first visit there. There's a whole load of rock formations for the eye (and camera) to take in. I noticed on their website that the main picture they were using was taken by Joe Cornish, so I took it upon myself to see if I could replicate it in my own way. This picture is the result - sadly no fluffy white clouds as there is in Mr Cornish's...

I spent a few hours the other weekend walking round the Ingleton Waterfall Trail, and hoped I come away with some good photos... Here's one of some really bare and twisted roots that look as though they're ready to spring up and grab your ankles.
